Atlas Xtreme Team

Yorkville, IL

In the summer of 2007, Sensei Charles Clark (Sandan) founded the Atlas Xtreme Team. Located in Yorkville, Illinois, approximately 50 miles southwest of Chicago, AXT focuses on technical instruction and competitive applications of Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Submission Wrestling (no-gi).  Sensei Clark’s insight into competitive grappling led AXT to focus on Ne-Waza conditioning and drilling, giving AXT a reputation as strong ground fighting academy.  Kid’s classes and Aiki-Budo Jujitsu are also available.

With over 40 years of experience in Judo as a student, competitor, coach, instructor and club owner, Sensei Clark brought a wealth of knowledge to his students.  He credits Sensei Joe Scarzone and Sensei Jean-Luc Moreau as being very influential towards his Judo success.

Atlas Xreme Team has been a registered USA Judo club since it’s inception.  The entire coaching staff are registered coaches through USA Judo, and are SafeSport certified.  All the coaching staff have competitive experience and enjoy passing along their knowledge to the students.

COACHES:

Sensei Chris Mikuta (Nidan) is currently the club’s owner and head coach, as he took over the club at a personal request from Sensei Clark in 2013.  Chris has competed throughout his grappling career, and works to help AXT students reach their training and competitive goals as well.  He has earned black belts in Judo and Shingitai Jujitsu, is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and holds instructor credentials in other martial arts.  Sensei Chris is also involved in the club’s Aiki-Budo Jujitsu program where he enjoys just “being a student”.

Joe Perona is one of AXT’s newest black belts, and recently took over as the lead kid’s class coach.  Coach Joe has been an active student of the grappling arts and is also the father of an aspiring judoka.  Having young children has helped him bring a fresh perspective to the kid’s class.  He rarely misses a class himself, and often helps support the adult class.  He has been dedicated to the club’s overall success, and can be found making some of the cool club videos which can be seen on AXT’s Facebook page.  Coach Joe is also a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Kyle Backus is AXT’s other new black belt.  He started with the club back in his early teens and has been a driving force for the younger members.  Coach Kyle helps support the kid’s class and can be found helping instruct during the adult classes as well.  Competitive aspirations have been in the forefront for Coach Kyle.  He constantly tests himself by getting on the mat, and recently had the opportunity to compete against one of USA’s Olympic athletes at the 2016 Irwin Cohen Memorial tournament.  Coach Kyle is also a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Bill Vitek (Nidan) came to AXT several years ago as a black belt from another club.  He volunteered to run the kid’s class for several years, and is the father of two aspiring judoka.  Coach Bill is involved in the fitness industry and brings unique training methods to AXT.  He helps support the kids class, constantly works to learn and improve himself, and graciously helps students achieve their goals as well.  Coach Bill holds rank in several martial arts, and is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Tim Wolf (Nidan) has been involved with AXT since it’s beginning, and has been a staunch supporter of the AXT program.  He is the father of three judoka, all whom fiercely competed during various times of their training.  Coach Tim is always ready to lend a hand where needed, and selflessly gives of himself for the good of the club.

Atlas Xtreme Team is also affiliated with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Roy Dean, a renown instructor who teaches seminars globally each year. He has produced multiple high-end instructional martial arts dvds, has written books on his experiences in the martial arts and BJJ specifically, has affiliated academies and students across the globe, and holds rank in other martial arts including a Judo black belt, which he earned while living in Japan.
